I love going to a conference where I just can't write down the new ideas fast enough! Both speakers were entertaining and inspiring - what an amazing combinations. Here are just a few of the quotes I took away -
"'What does this book assume you know and are able to do?' That is the only question that matters for text complexity." (Lester Laminack)
"You have to be wrong a lot, or you are not going to get smarter. And you have to be brave about sharing your wrongness." (Kelly Gallagher)
"Reading is less about ability and more about opportunity." (Richard Allington)
"It all starts with access to interesting books." (Kelly Gallagher)
"Wow. That is one of my favorite books. I just love it." (Lester Laminack)
Both presenters reminded me that we not only have to model the strategies and skills we want our students to learn, but we have to share our love of reading - I have to be a reader as much as a teacher. Both Lester and Kelly said they start every class with a read aloud - then, just close the book, "leave it hanging" and start that math or science lesson you have on the schedule...!
